The Berthoud Bugle: Will Your Possessions Save you?

Food for thought: Have we turned our "stuff" into Gods'?

Hello everyone, and welcome back. We appreciate you coming back for the update this week and month as we continue to grow and study His word.

The very first two commandments that God gives us in Exodus 20 are that we shall have no other Gods before Him and that we shall not make or worship idols over Him. This commandment is so important that He reiterates it twice. Many of us may think that we are safe from breaking this commandment because we claim to be "Christians" having faith and serving the one and only Living God, but if this is so, why do we choose to look at our phones when we are in church?

This simple action may not seem to go against the commandment that God has set for us, but we are turning our phones, our money, our relationships, and our possessions into God's.

This is not to say that we can't have possessions, or that it's not okay for us to be excited about things, but that we can't let our "Stuff" get in the way of our relationship with God. We shouldn't be so focused on celebrities, influencers, trends, brands, money, or things because our things don't save us. Only Jesus Christ saved us, and only through Him can we have eternal life. Jesus reminds us of this in Matthew 19:16-30 when He notes that we can have all the riches in the world, but that will not get us to heaven. In fact, it will drive us away from God and serve to take us away from our salvation.

"Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also"

(Matthew 6:19-21)

"Command those who are rich in this present age not to be haughty, nor to trust in uncertain riches but in the living God, who gives us richly all things to enjoy. Let them do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to give, willing to share, storing up for themselves a good foundation for the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life."

(1 Timothy 6:17-19)

"For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?"

(Matthew 16:26)

So, we do not have to live as minimalists and go without a phone, but we must remember that our "stuff" is just "stuff", that Jesus is our savior and that we should seek first the kingdom of heaven over the treasures of the world. Just some food for thought...

Weekly Devotional: Security Blanket

Do not search for security in the world you inhabit. You tend to make mental checklists of things you need to do in order to gain control of your life. If only you could check everything off your list, you could relax and be at peace. But the more you work to accomplish that goal, the more things crop up on your list. The harder you try, the more frustrated you become.

There is a better way to find security in this life. Instead of scrutinizing your checklist, focus your attention on the Lord's presence with you. This continual contact with Him will keep you in His Peace. Moreover, He will help you sort out what is important and what is not, what needs to be done now and what does not. Fix your eyes not on what is seen (your circumstances), but on what is unseen (God's presence).

(2 Corinthians 4:18)
